Two years ago, in June 2008, Tehachapi's almost restored, 100-year-old train depot burned down.
Investigators later determined that illegal fireworks caused the fire. The suspects were arrested and eventually took a plea deal.
In the meantime, efforts to rebuild the depot kept chugging along. On Saturday, the historic depot officially reopened.
"This is a real day of success for our community," said Mayor Linda Vernon.
And it seems the whole community came out to see the finished product.
"I'm just thrilled, the whole community is," said resident Peggy Horn. "To have it finally opened, it's indescribable."
No one denies the significance of the reopening, but for some, such as Doug Pickard who has been a volunteer with Friends of the Tehachapi Train Depot, it meant even more.
Pickard said he believes the reopening will push the city forward.
"The history of Tehachapi centers around the railroad," he said.
