Tehachapi mountains alive with the sound of music

Submitted by Carol Ferguson on Monday, July 5th, 11:07 am

The mountains will be alive with the sound of music in July.  Camp Kiya will be held in the Tehachapi Mountains, and give students a unique music experience.

The camp starts Sunday, July 25 and runs through Wednesday, July 28.

Camp organizers say they'll offer ways for students to explore a new instrument or improve playing on an instrument.

The camp features teachers from the traditional music community.  They'll offer lessons in mandolin, guitar, accordion, penny whistle, harmonica, mountain dulcimer, percussion, piano, flute, ukulele, and bass.

Campers can also enjoy dancing, hiking and workshops on native folklore.

The camp costs $175, and that includes room and board plus the workshops from Sunday through Wednesday.

Community pool may reopen

Submitted by Sabrina Rodriguez on Monday, February 1st, 12:19 am

A meeting to reopen the community pool in Tehachapi is being hailed a success.

The swimming pool at the Tehachapi Valley Parks and Recreation District was not expected to reopen this year because of budget cuts. That outraged parents of high school and club swimmers.

Community members presented a plan over the weekend offering to pay for 85 percent of the pool's operating expenses up front.

It now has to be approved by the district board, and an emergency meeting is expected to happen within a week.
